The Myth of VirgoPersephone was the daughter of Demeter, the goddess of the harvest. Hades, God of the Underworld, feel in love at first sight with Persephone, and spirited her away to his underworld realm. The rage of her mother Demeter led Zeus, lord of all the Gods, to order Hades to return Persephone to the surface. As Persephone made her way back toward the sunlight, however, she fed upon the pomegranates of the underworld. All who ate those pomegranates had to live with Hades for one month for every pip consumed. In her sadness at this turn of events, Demeter concealed herself for a few months each year in the temple of the moon, and during this period the trees and grass withered and died. This is said to be where winter comes from.
